“I keep my eyes clear and I hit ‘em where they ain’t.” This was baseball’s Willie Keeler’s famous explanation for his .432 average in 1897. This applies well for baseball, but not fishing. To be successful, you need to be able to get where the fish are, not be “where they ain’t” and a great way to accomplish this to use a kayak.

Boat fishing is an exciting activity that sometimes requires an adventurer spirit in order to get the best catch. Ranging from the stability of sliding-seats rowboats, to the powerful motor board, fishing on ponds, rivers and lakes can become an unforgettable experience.

Fishing is becoming so popular that the demand often exceeds the capabilities of Alberta streams and lakes to produce adequate numbers of fish. Mortality must be kept low to in order to maintain and recover fish populations, the release of fish is an important tool to allow anglers to enjoy their sport, yet minimize the impact on fish populations. As an avid fly fisherman, and the father of two very enthusiastic teenage fisherman, I believe all fisherman should follow catch and release practices, to help relieve the angling pressures, and to ensure the success in this ever growing popular sport. All across Alberta, fish stocks have been managed by size limits and possession limits in order to help prevent the exhaustion of our fisheries. Without limits, our rivers and lakes would be not nearly as productive as they are today, and with the help of Alberta Fish and Wildlife Association, and the individual fishermen, together we can insure a bountiful stock for future generations to come.

With the excitement of my first trip to Alaska still fresh and percolating in my mind, I can hardly keep from telling fishing friends and aquaintances of my ensuing trip.

Nothing is better than to snap a photo of your big fish that you just caught.

You’ve spent the day out on the lake and then you feel a pull at the line. You finally pull that big one in and you decide to get a great snapshot of you holding the fish. Wait!

As part of an email discussion list I’m part of, the subject of following our passions came up. I mentioned that one of my lifelong passions was fishing. I got the following reply…

For the majority people, Christmas time means shopping for gifts, cards and presents for their friends, family, co-workers and many others. Unfortunately, shopping for Christmas often times creates a lot of stress and burden for people due to the fact that they have to go out, fight the crowds and pay retail prices for the Christmas gifts they buy.

I decided to write this guide because a couple of years ago I was the “beginner.” I don’t claim to be a master at it, but I have lost my fair share of fish and have put a few in the freezer each year. Let me start by saying that, to the best of my knowledge, Michigan has the best Salmon fishery in the United States except for Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (which is where our Salmon were originally stocked from). I also have to say that once you hook one, you will be “hooked” on the experience. I have broken this article into several parts to keep it organized, and from time to time the article will be updated as I learn more about it. This year I am going to try fly-fishing for the Salmon as well as bait fishing.

Every true angler knows that no matter the species being fished the prime time starts when the ice melts. This is when male fish will start moving into shallow spawning grounds and more importantly 1-3 pound walleyes.

Have you ever spent hour after unproductive hour fishing on a lake with nothing to show for it? I doubt there’s a serious angler anywhere who hasn’t had that happen to them. So, if you can relate to that, this article about the advantages of a fish finder might be just what you need.
